MIOSA vs Modal

Modal and MIOSA both run compute for AI products. This page compares them on the independent ComputeSDK sandbox benchmark and on the capabilities MIOSA documents.

What Modal is

Modal is a serverless cloud platform for running compute for AI workloads, including sandboxed containers, described in its public documentation at modal.com/docs (as of October 2026). It is widely used for model serving, batch jobs, and GPU work as well as sandboxes.

Measured performance

The independent ComputeSDK benchmark runs the same sandbox workload against every provider.

Where MIOSA differs

These capabilities are documented for MIOSA on this site:

  • Persistent computers with a desktop, not only headless containers. See Computers.
  • Deployments and App Engine to ship finished apps. See Deployments.
  • White-label platform for branded, multi-tenant products. See White-label setup.
  • Agent runs and harnesses as a first-class surface. See Agent runs.
  • MCP, a CLI, and six SDKs over one API. See MCP, CLI, SDKs.

When to choose each

  • Choose Modal if you need serverless GPU compute, model serving, or general batch infrastructure alongside sandboxes.
  • Choose MIOSA if your product is agent- and app-shaped: sandboxes, full computers, agent runs, deployments, managed data, and a white-label surface, with the measured startup figures above.
